How to Store Fruits and Vegetables Correctly

The right storage method can make produce last several days longer and reduce unnecessary food waste.

Produce spoils faster when it is stored in the wrong temperature, packed too tightly, or kept beside items that release ethylene gas. Small changes can stretch freshness noticeably.

Know what belongs in the fridge

Leafy greens, berries, carrots, and broccoli do best in the refrigerator. Use breathable storage and dry them well to reduce moisture damage.

Keep certain produce on the counter

Bananas, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and whole potatoes generally keep better outside the fridge. Store them in a cool, dry spot with good airflow.

Separate fast-ripening items

Apples, bananas, and avocados can speed up ripening in nearby produce. Keep them apart if you want the rest of your fruits and vegetables to last longer.
